Climate change and its impacts on nature and humanity is the major issue of the 21st Century. Understanding the processes, that drive climate shifts and finding the patterns of climate change in the geological past are important for future forecasts and modelling climatic variability, including changes in the frequency of extreme climatic events has always had a large impact on the environment. By the human activity, the climate change and its impacts increase drastically. To understand about on the Earth’s climate and knowledge about the past is essential. The records of past climate change from satellites and human measurements generally cover less than 150 years. It is too short to examine the full range of climatic variability. In this scenario paleo climatic studies were employed to examine climate change going back hundreds and thousands of years.

Western Ghats known for their high biodiversity pattern and has a complex geological history, having been severely affected in response to changing climatic conditions in the geological past. The present study aims at unfolding the paleo climatic and paleo ecological conditions of High ranges of Idukki district during the Quaternary period, using depositional framework.

As part of the project, collected samples from various parts of Western Ghats lies along the Idukki district.The altitude range is in the category of 150-2000m above mean sea level. Thesoil core samples were taken from 1-2 m depth form various terrains and drainage basins. The collected samples were subject to various analysis such as physio chemical analysis, radiocarbon chronology, paleontological analysis etc. Sedimentological analysis is carried out for interpreting the pattern of sedimentation, degree of weathering, composition of sediments etc. Palynological analysis provide the information about type of vegetation existing in the past centuries.
