Weather and Climate are not stationary and have its own variability. Since evolution of the earth, surface temperature has been rising and before the industrialization, the rise may be attributed to the natural forcing. However, in the twentieth century, particularly during past 30 – 40 years, rise in surface temperature is quite spectacular.

Following the global trend, mean surface temperature over India has also risen over the past 110 years and this rise is around 0.6 0C. This rise over the larger parts of the data (from beginning) is contributed mainly by rise in maximum temperature. However, in the past 30 years or so, rise in minimum temperature is also quite significant. This indirectly confirms growing role of human related activities in influencing the temperature over India. Thus rise in the annual mean temperature over India in the recent thirty years is equally contributed by both the minimum and maximum temperatures.

One of the significant falls out of global warming is rise in frequency and intensity of extreme meteorological events like heat and cold wave / heavy rainfall events, cyclone etc.
